Premise

After being evicted from their home, two children and their single mother move to Summerville, Oklahoma after inheriting property from their late grandfather. When the town experiences a series of unexplained earthquakes, the children discover their family's link to the original Ghostbusters, who have become something of a myth as many have long-since forgotten the events of the "Manhattan Crossrip of 1984", and the secret legacy that their grandfather left behind.

The son of Ivan Reitman is gonna be directing this movie that's gonna come out the summer of 2020!

Reported title for new Ghostbusters film looks to be confirmed + trailer details!

The British Board of Film Classification has rated the first trailer to Jason Reitman’s upcoming Ghostbusters film, and with that has officially confirmed the film’s title!

As shown above, the much rumored “Afterlife” title looks to now be confirmed!

There’s no exact date given for when we can expect to see a trailer released. With Sony’s Jumanji: The Next Level scheduled to have UK based screening’s this weekend, many have assumed that the trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife could very well be attached to that. If so, you could expect the trailer to drop any day.

First Look at Ghostbusters: Afterlife
Director Jason Reitman conjures the spirit of the 1984 original in the upcoming film, which focuses on a single mom and her two kids.

Hauntings are real. They happen all the time, although not necessarily in a supernatural sense.

Regrets about the past. Guilt over lost moments. Unfinished business.

The single mom and her two kids at the center of Ghostbusters: Afterlife have all these conflicts, complications, and issues—but on top of that, this family is also dealing with actual free-floating, full-torso vaporous apparitions, focused nonterminal repeating phantasms, and Class 5 full-roaming vapors.

Real nasty ones too.

A trailer for the July 10 film will debut on Monday, and Vanity Fair got an exclusive glimpse of the new characters at the heart of the story, with The Leftovers’ Carrie Coon starring as mom Callie, I, Tonya’s Mckenna Grace as her science-obsessed daughter Phoebe, and Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard as gearhead son Trevor. They have left everything they know and moved to a small town in Oklahoma after inheriting property from the father she didn’t know.

Director and cowriter Jason Reitman (Up in the Air, Juno) takes over filmmaking duties from his own father, Ivan Reitman, who directed the original two Ghostbusters films, and returns for this one as a producer. Afterlife “is a new adventure that connects back to the Manhattan Crossrip of 1984,” Reitman said, unlike the 2016 all-female reboot, which started its story from scratch and existed in a different storytelling universe.

“Manhattan Crossrip” is the technical term for that long-ago bizarre incident in New York involving an apocalypse-summoning skyscraper, a gargantuan killer marshmallow man, and four working stiffs who managed to fight back against an ancient Sumerian God named Gozer.

Most of the original cast have committed to returning as their classic characters, although it’s not clear in what capacity they'll appear. (Harold Ramis died in 2014, and Rick Moranis, who has limited his screen work in recent years, is not expected to reprise his role.)

We probably won't see much of the classic characters until the film itself reveals what became of them over the past three decades. Callie and her family are also wondering how those guys fit into their lives.

“As the family arrives at an old farm, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters,” Reitman said. “Trevor and Phoebe are about to find out who their grandfather was and whether they’re ready to pick up the proton pack themselves.”

Reitman doesn’t want to confirm much else about the family’s history, but people may already notice some familiarity in their appearance.

In the collapsing barn of their farmhouse, they find an old car, bloomed with rust, hidden beneath a tarp—the retro-ambulance turned ghost-hunting mobile. In this shot, Trevor lays eyes on his new ride for the first time, originally hinted at a year ago in the movie’s teaser.

Elsewhere in the house, which is packed with a mountain of books and lots of bizarre technology, Phoebe will find a device that reads psychokinetic energy. Ghostbusters fans will recognize that immediately as a tool of the trade from the original movies.

“The joy of cowriting a film like this is imagining the sound of Ecto-1’s engine revving back to life or the moment a PKE meter lights up for the first time and begins leading you toward your destiny,” said Reitman, who penned the script with Monster House and City of Ember filmmaker Gil Kenan.

While her brother tinkers with the car, Phoebe finds herself transfixed by the mystery of their new town—not just by the peculiar subjects in their dilapidated home, but strange rumblings from a nearby mine. In this shot, she and her schoolmate (played by Logan Kim) ignore warning signs to venture closer to the abandoned and dangerous place.

Trevor and Phoebe may actually know less about the Ghostbusters than anyone. What happened in 1984 is as mysterious to them as Van Halen and Run-DMC is to Billie Eilish.

Fortunately, they have a summer school teacher named Mr. Grooberson (played by Paul Rudd) who was a kid when the Manhattan Crossrip occurred. Although later generations may think of it as a myth, or not think of it at all, he remembers it obsessively and is excited to pass on what he knows.

Here we see the teacher stunned to be holding an actual ghost trap. It’s been a while since he’s seen anything like this, and never this close.

He might think he already knows a lot, but all of them are about to get an education in the otherworldly.

Sony show off new Ghostbusters logo + Jason Reitman hypes Monday’s trailer reveal

With Ghostbusters: Afterlife‘s trailer set to premiere this coming Monday, Sony is starting to prepare for the next chapter in the Ghostbusters saga.

The official Facebook page for Ghost Corps just changed their image over to this variant design of the iconic no-ghost logo. Featuring a dirty coat of paint and several rivets, we’re certainly getting an Extreme Ghostbusters vibe!

Ghostbusters: Afterlife director Jason Reitman took to Instagram to further hype Monday’s trailer reveal, showcasing himself wearing a t-shirt with a custom “REITMAN” nametag with the caption:

“CAN’T WAIT FOR MONDAY!”
Neither can we, Mr. Reitman. Neither can we!

Following yesterday’s trailer reveal for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the internet has been buzzing with eager fans voicing their excitement and enthusiasm over this third installment set within the original Ghostbusters universe.

One of the most notable fans that decided to chime in was Ghostbusters: Answer the Call director Paul Feig, who posted the following to Twitter:

Original Surviving Cast Confirmed for Ghostbusters 2020

The surviving cast of Ghostbusters have signed on for slime detail. Bill Murray, Dan Akyroyd and co. will be picking up their proton packs and teaming up for the first time since 1989, in Jason Reitman’s much-anticipated Ghostbusters 2020.

Star Dan Aykroyd announced the news in an interview on The Gregg Hill Show. Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore) previously said he was involved, but this confirms what fans had been hoping for – Murray, Aykroyd (Ray Stantz), Sigourney Weaver (Dana Barrett) and Annie Potts (Janine Melnitz), together with Hudson, have all been working on set.

Aykroyd spoke in glowing terms about the latest resurrection, describing “a beautiful, heartfelt script that takes the real DNA from the first two movies and transfers that directly to the third, the next generation.” That next generation is Ant-Man Paul Rudd, together with Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard and young actress Mckenna Grace.

All 3 are familiar with things that go bump in the night – early in his career Rudd faced Michael Myers in Halloween 6. And aside from Wolfhard battling creatures from the Upside Down in Stranger Things, Grace has starred in Annabelle Comes Home and The Haunting of Hill House.

Story-wise, the action appears to move away from the Ghostbusters’ traditional stamping ground of New York and into a quieter, residential setting. Rudd is reportedly playing a teacher. The sight of the infamous Ecto-1 under a tarpaulin in the teaser trailer suggests a group rediscovering the notorious team.

Director Jason Reitman (Juno) is the son of original Ghostbusters helmer Ivan, and many feel he’s an apt choice to continue the legacy. He co-wrote the screenplay with Gil Kenan. Columbia Pictures and Reitman Sr produce. Ghost Corps, co-headed by Aykroyd, are also credited.

Reitman tantalized fans with some info at a 35th anniversary Ghostbusters fan event. He referred to it as “a love letter to the original movie”. The starting point was the idea of “a 12 year old girl. I didn’t know who she was or why she popped into my head, but I saw her with a proton pack in her hand. And I wrote this story… And eventually I knew this movie that I needed to make, that I needed to write.”

There are 2 noticeable absences from the credits. Harold Ramis, who played spook-slapping genius Egon Spengler, passed away in 2014. And Rick Moranis has been virtually retired from showbusiness since 1997, though could be persuaded to reprise Louis Tully.

A third adventure for the classic line up has been in the offing for decades. Following an attempt to reboot the franchise in 2016 with an all-female cast, it seemed the brand was as dormant as Gozer the Gozerian.

Aykroyd was the most vocal about a third chapter, often talking about a new team of Busters. The franchise has spawned animated series, comic books, novels, video games, toys and other merchandise. Slimer, the mischievous green ghoul with a limitless appetite, became a main attraction. However up to this point the movie series hasn’t regained that Eighties momentum.

Murray took some persuading to play the role of Venkman in the first place. Another project of his – W. Somerset Maugham adaptation The Razor’s Edge (1984) – was bankrolled to sweeten the deal. He didn’t act for 4 years after, feeling Ghostbusters had been too big to top. The box office failure of Razor’s Edge also contributed to this decision. When he decided to do Ghostbusters II he found the result disappointing.

He eventually made a cameo in Paul Feig’s 2016 take (as an ill-fated sceptic). “Billy and I showed up to work on that because we had faith in that vision,” Aykroyd revealed. Aykroyd, Weaver, Hudson and Potts also appeared in Feig’s reboot. It isn’t clear how big the veteran casts’ parts will be this time round.

Ghostbusters 2020 is set for release next July. Studios hope audiences answer the call.

Earlier in the week, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call director Paul Feig tweeted out his support for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, saying:

While Feig’s comments were already a news worthy, Jason Reitman replied earlier today with:

The lovefest didn’t end there, as Feig wrote back:

I’m so excited to see the Ghostbusters universe grow. And I don’t have Holtzy’s flight suit but I do have her proton pack. Let’s talk!

If only the Ghostbusters fandom could get along this well!

The original cast passes the proton pack to a new generation in Jason Reitman’s upcoming movie.

I didn’t even have to use the "magic word." It was Bill Murray’s idea for me to try on a proton pack.

In the middle of an interview on a busy soundstage during shooting last September, Murray signaled to one of the prop masters. “You think you can do me a favor?” he said. “Can you get the heavy pack? And put it on Anthony? Let him wear it for a while. I don’t think he understands exactly what it’s like.”

There was a pause. “Seriously?” asked prop master Ben Eadie, the Ghostbusters’ armorer.

“Yeah,” Murray said. “Seriously.”

Out of respect for spoilers, I can’t tell you what was happening around us or even who else was in the scene. But I can tell you we were in Canada on the set of this summer's upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and Murray, just days before celebrating his 69th birthday, was determined to show a visiting journalist that bustin’ doesn’t always make you feel good.

“When you put that gear on, it’s so uncomfortable. It’s so heavy, just to stand there with that weight on your back, tilting your spine,” he said, rolling his eyes at the memory from 36 years ago. “And we wore them for a long time.”

That’s something he especially liked about the new movie, directed and cowritten by Jason Reitman (Up in the Air, Juno). Newcomers are shouldering the movie this time.

Ever since the new project was announced a year ago, fans have wondered if the stars of the earlier films would return, and tidbits of news have been leaking out sideways. Murray was definitely on the set at various times during that week last fall, as were Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson, reprising their respective roles as Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Winston Zeddemore. Also visiting the location during those days were Annie Potts the long-suffering receptionist Janine Melnitz and Sigourney Weaver who played frequent malevolence magnet Dana Barrett. (Rick Moranis, who was accountant Louis Tully in the original, has largely withdrawn from performing over the past 20 years and did not return.)

Exactly how the originals will figure into the July 10 release will be left for the film to reveal, along with how the narrative deals with the absence of Egon Spengler since actor Harold Ramis, who cowrote the original movie with Aykroyd, died in 2014. “Well, we are a man down. That’s the deal,” Murray said, pursing his lips, looking down. “And that’s the story that we’re telling, that’s the story they’ve written.”

Ghostbusters: Afterlife teaser filming location + Director Jason Reitman comments on tomorrow’s trailer

Earlier today, Sony Pictures released a teaser for tomorrow’s long-awaited second trailer to Ghostbusters: Afterlife. That teaser, while short, raised a few questions, one of which came from some fans trying to figure out what the red structure was that the Ecto-1 can be seen driving by.

As mentioned in the above video, the structure is a grain elevator located in Dorothy, Alberta. For those unaware, Ghostbusters: Afterlife was filmed in various locations throughout Alberta between July and October 2019.

In some additional trailer news, director Jason Reitman also shared his excitement for tomorrow’s reveal, taking to social media, saying:

Ghostbusters: Afterlife director Jason Reitman shares Instagram story featuring famed NYC Firehall

In what was a bit of a slower news day, Ghostbusters: Afterlife director Jason Reitman has gotten fans talking after posting an image of the famed Hooker & Ladder 8 to his Instagram story.

Reitman provided absolutely no context to the upload, leaving many Ghostbusters fans excited, as well, having a handful of questions.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife takes the Ghostbusters story outside of New York City and instead places it in the fictitious small town of Summerville, Oklahoma, with currently no knowledge on if the famed Firehall will make an appearance in the film.

Coming off the heels of a surprise New York Comic Con screening, a brand new poster for Ghostbusters: Afterlife is here, hyping up the film’s upcoming release at Cinemark locations.

The official Ghostbusters Twitter page just sent out the below tweet.

As seen above, the poster features the Ecto-1 barreling around the corner, where an old familiar face can be seen off in the distance.

Last month two additional posters were released for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, with both showcasing the Ecto-1.

The first poster, which was said to be used for North American distribution, showcases the new cast in the main street of Summerville as a Gozerian threat engulfs the sky.

The second poster, which was initially said to be for international markets, has been seen at North American theater chains, is a bit different. The Ecto-1 is still featured, but the focus has certainly shifted to the cast, with Paul Rudd standing in the forefront.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife arrives exclusively in theaters on November 19th.
